In an interview with CBS News, former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick implied that the white family who adopted him was racist.

“I know my parents loved me, but there were still very problematic things that I went through,” said Kaepernick. He went on to mention a time when he wanted to get cornrows, and his mom said that the hairstyle was “unprofessional” and would make him look like, “a little thug.”

Kaepernick added, “I think it was important to show, ‘No, this can happen in your own home.’ And how do we move forward collectively while addressing the racism that is being perpetuated.”

Kaepernick famously took a knee to protest what he claimed was police brutality as part of the Black Lives Matter movement. He went on to have a documentary series wherein he claimed that the NFL was similar to slavery – then followed up that documentary by requesting an NFL tryout.

Kaepernick was on CBS News to promote his new graphic novel about his youth.
