Japan’s Whaling Industry Banks on Vending Machines

Published

on

Japan is well known as the vending machine capitol of the world – travelers and locals alike know that you can get anything in a vending machine in the east-asian country.

One thing that hasn’t been offered before are food products made from whales. Japan’s flailing whaling industry is attempting to revitalize itself in the country by offering whale sashimi, whale steak and whale bacon in new vending machines that have just been unveiled in Yokohama.

Food products made from whale, as one can imagine, haven’t been popular in Japan and many other countries for years – and this vending machine play may be one of the industry’s last chances at survival.

According to Reuters, whale vending machines are being set up in Tokyo, Yokohama and Osaka -only time will tell if this will keep the whale-as-food industry afloat – many think this outdated food is destined for extinction.
